The iconography of this battle scene is a little confusing; the combat between Sa'd ibn Waqqas and Rustam, both on foot, as in the text, is taking place in the bottom left register of the picture, and Rustam is being dealt a mortal blow. The identity of the two royal horsemen in the upper register is uncertain. Probably, the painting depicts the action serially, with the first encounter of the opposing forces at the top, with their respective generals, and the denoiuement at the bottom.
